Writing about the amazing surf event that is Pipe Masters was a lot of fun. I admit, it’s one of the few times of the year that I’ve not been to Hawaii. Though, in recent years, there’s been change to the format, the timing of the event, naming, everything.
This chapter was written to help flesh out the relationships of the two best friends, while introducing the love interest in greater detail. I look at writing some chapters like bridges, connecting to necessary plot points.
Writing this chapter allowed me to get a little imaginative. What I know of Pipe Masters and the area during that time of year is only what I’ve seen on TV or read in articles. I know it gets chaotic and the small area of the North Shore gets overrun.
While this chapter centers around the world’s biggest surf event, we don’t experience much surfing in the chapter. We get some conversational discussion around the sport from the main characters.
This chapter became a mix of writing narrative and dialogue. I make an effort to use both types of elements to move the story along while filling in details about the characters. I don’t want to corner myself into one form of storytelling or character development. With this being my first novel, this became very experimental. Readers gave me feedback with minimal suggestions about this form of writing.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
